Demas Nwoko's Idumuje-Ugboko House and Studio
Demas Nwoko's Idumuje-Ugboko house and studio have a pitched overhanging roof that resembles traditional buildings in southeastern Nigeria from the 1920s. While the ridged external columns resemble the fluted walls of Oba's palace in Benin City, an atrium within the house housed a fiberglass-lined funnel, or impluvium, which collected rainwater and cooled the interior. This house embodies some of the finest of Nwoko's blend of traditional aesthetics with modern, sustainable building, with laterite blocks providing insulation and subtle natural lighting.
